More About the City of Wabash, Indiana
We love being your orthodontist in Wabash, Indiana. The city is the county seat of Wabash County with a population of more than 10,000 residents. Most notably, Wabash has claimed to be the first electrically lighted city in the world. In reality, only the courthouse grounds were lighted in 1880 using a new type of carbon arc light invented by Charles Bush. Three thousand candle power lamps were suspended from the top of the courthouse and two telegraph wires ran from the lamps to the courthouse basement where they were connected to a threshing machine to provide power.
The name of the town derives from a Miami-Illinois tribe term for “water over the white stones,” which describes the clarity of the river where the bottom is limestone. The Salamonie and Mississinewa Reservoirs in Wabash play host to an array of outdoor adventures, art, culture, food and more, including two of the remaining 100 historic wooden covered bridges in the Hoosier State. Wabash schools provide a relevant and rigorous education, ensuring each student is ready for college or a career and ultimately success in a global community.
Wabash is home to the Dam to Dam Wabash County Century Ride presented by Parkview Wabash Hospital. It is organized by a group of volunteers dedicated to the advancement of trails and greenways throughout Wabash County. The Century Ride route is designed to take riders over the Salamonie and Mississinewa Dam and around the Stockdale Dam.
